Creel Clerk Reports
Lower Shore (Lester to Stewart rivers)
Early spring fishing has been slow, with water temperatures just above freezing. The Lester River is mostly thawed, with little anchor or shelf ice remaining. Other lower shore streams still have significant ice cover, but conditions are improving quickly. Warmer temperatures and upcoming precipitation should improve conditions this weekend and could bring in the first early-run fish. Overall, angling pressure has been low. A few steelhead have been caught from shore using worms or spawn, but no fish have been reported caught in the streams yet.
Middle Shore (Silver Creek to Baptism River)
Angler activity was very low this period, with no in-stream anglers observed or interviewed. However, a few dedicated anglers have caught staging steelhead in the lake near river mouths. Most streams remain iced over, especially in lower, flatter sections, and water temperatures are still very cold.
Heads up: The west-side trail below the barrier on the Baptism River is closed due to a major washout last year. Plan accordingly.
Upper Shore (Cross to Brule rivers)
Heavy shelf ice still covers all Upper Shore rivers, with many completely iced over. Angling opportunities are limited to river mouths and the open lake. Recent snow and cold temperatures have also made trails and access points slick and hazardous. Despite the surface ice, larger rivers have decent flow, and with lots of inland snow left, warmer weather should start breaking up the ice soon. No anglers were seen this week, but a few tracks in the snow show that some have ventured out—cautiously and at their own risk.
