Rivers and Lake Superior Spring Update
Despite a few warm days the past few weeks, North Shore rivers are still locked up with ice. Some larger rivers have snowmelt flowing over the top of the ice sheets. With most overnights predicted to remain below freezing it should continue to be a slow progression to ice-free rivers and warmer water temperatures unless we get a significant rain event to help move things along. With mostly open boat launches, boat anglers have begun trolling nearshore areas for Lake Trout and Coho salmon, initial reports suggest action has been good. Please remember to allow water to drain at the bottom of the boat launch, near the waters surface, to prevent ice from forming on the launch.
Management Update
It is time once again to update the Fisheries Management Plan for the Minnesota Waters of Lake Superior! The Lake Superior Fisheries Office will be hosting an all-day “kick-off conference” on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at the Clyde Iron Event Center. There will be speakers from around Lake Superior as well as Minnesota DNR folks providing updates on the Minnesota fishery. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP Cory Goldsworthy by email (cory.goldsworthy@state.mn.us).
