Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
The weather conditions made fishing difficult at times this week. Storms brought strong winds, rain, and even a bit of hail. However, on the fair-weather days, anglers reported consistent catches of Lake Trout from Duluth to Two Harbors. Anglers trolling from McQuade to Two Harbors had the best luck running silver spoons 55-75 feet down. Most of the Lakers were 17-19 inches long, but a few large fish were reported too. Salmon were very sparse with only a few people reporting catches. Anglers were still catching a decent number of Walleye in the St. Louis River Estuary despite the growing number of weeds. Planar boards and bright stickbaits produced the best results. Several reports of Lake Trout being caught from the Agate Bay Break Wall in Two Harbors were received this week. This is typically one of the better shore angling opportunities for Lake Trout on Lake Superior. Casting spoons early in the morning or at sunset and letting them sink for a bit before retrieval can be productive.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps rose along the Upper Shore this week and reached the mid 50’s. Grand Marais anglers reported fair fishing for 17-20 inch Lakers, trolling spoons, in 120-180 feet of water, near bottom structure. Board lines, dipsy divers, and flat lines were increasingly productive as the water temps warmed. For those anglers looking for larger fish, A few 20-30 inch Lakers were caught suspended in the water column. Electronics are particularly useful for finding these scattered fish. Silver Bay anglers reported that as the water warmed closer to shore, the offshore bite slowed. Despite warmer water along the Upper Shore, no Salmon were reported from any station. A single large Brown Trout and one Steelhead were reported this week, but these seem likely to be outliers. Angler pressure rose slightly at all stations this week but was still low.
