Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Heavy rains and flooding have muddied up the water along the Lower Shore. Several anglers reported encountering lots of debris in the water making fishing difficult at times. Keep an eye out for logs and other submerged debris while navigating the Lake and err on the side of caution. No fish is worth serious injury to you, your passengers, or your watercraft. Despite these challenges, anglers caught good numbers of Lake Trout trolling spoons 45-60 feet down, particularly from McQuade to Duluth. Brightly colored spoons seemed to be the most effective, but some fish were caught on flasher fly rigs and stickbaits too. The St. Louis River Estuary Walleye bite slowed somewhat, but anglers reported finding fish using brightly colored stick baits in the shallower waters. Several very nice Chinook Salmon were caught while trolling for Lake Trout, near the Lester River, running lines at the 45-60 foot range with brightly colored spoons. Although the numbers of Salmon caught were not high the size and quality of these fish was excellent.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Anglers reported surface water temps were variable and depended heavily on wind direction. They were as warm as 50°F on the 24th but fell to 40°F following stiff north and west winds. Heavy rains caused river flooding, especially further south, causing large sediment plumes in Lake Superior. Anglers from Taconite Harbor and Silver Bay reported that this slowed down fishing success. As a result, some anglers traveled far offshore in search of warmer clearer water and found a few large Lakers. Further north, near Grand Marais, anglers did not encounter this problem as much due to lower rainfalls. Grand Marais anglers reported decent Lake Trout fishing in deep water and near bottom structure. Most of the fish were in the 17-24 inch range and caught on bright spoons or flasher fly rigs. No Salmon were reported this week. Some shore anglers have begun to catch a few Brook Trout and smaller Lake Trout though not in great numbers.
