Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Surface water temps were in the 50’s near Duluth this week thanks to warm water from the St. Louis River. Lake trout fishing was slower this week, but anglers still found success near Duluth, trolling bright stickbaits in the upper 20 feet of water, at 2-3 mph. Some nice sized Chinook and Coho Salmon were also caught this way but not in great numbers. Further up the shore, from McQuade to Two Harbors, fishing was slower, likely due to cooler water temps in the 40’s. Anglers at McQuade typically reported catching only 1 or 2 fish, with most under 20 inches. However, one lucky angler reported catching a beautiful 13 pound Brown Trout. Anglers did well again this week for Walleye, in the St. Louis River Estuary, trolling stickbaits and worm harnesses or jigging.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps warmed into the low 40’s in some areas but averaged around 39°F along the Upper Shore. Heavy rains raised water levels in the rivers and led to lower water clarity in both near shore and open lake waters at all stations. Anglers from Silver Bay reported good fishing for 2-3 pound Lake Trout trolling close to bottom in deep water or jigging deep structure. Grand Marais anglers reported slow fishing and pressure was light. Angler activity was interrupted at Silver Bay due to the fuel spill at the ore docks and the clean-up operation. The public boat ramp is open and safe for anglers to use. Shore anglers fishing in river mouths reported a few Steelhead were still around and they caught a few Brook Trout too. Large numbers of suckers were present in the bigger rivers and streams.
