Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Surface water temperatures near Duluth were in the low 50’s this week thanks to the St. Louis River inputting warmer water. Fishing near Duluth was good for Lake Trout using stick baits in the top 20 feet of the water column, trolling between 2-3 mph. Targeting the edges of the stained water and temperature breaks was the most effective strategy to get on fish. Anglers also report catching some nice Walleye close to Duluth while trolling stick baits in shallower water. Reports of Salmon were sparse, but a few smaller fish were caught on stick baits while trolling for Lakers. The fishing further up the shore, from McQuade to Two harbors, has been much slower. The water temps were cooler and angler success was much lower. Memorial Day flooded some of the accesses with pleasure boaters limiting the number of anglers who launched and were interviewed in those areas. St. Louis River Estuary anglers caught good numbers of nice Walleye trolling worm harnesses, stick baits, and jigging worms.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps were 36-38°F along the Middle and Upper Shore this week. Angler pressure was light from all stations and weather conditions were variable, with stiff winds blowing and some rainy weather keeping many folks off the lake. However, anglers from Grand Marais reported decent fishing for 18-22 inch Lake Trout in 140-180 feet of water, close to bottom structure. Silver Bay fishing was slower with most Lake Trout caught in deep water and close to the bottom. A few larger fish in the 4-8 pound range were caught suspended in the water column. Bright spoons and flasher fly combinations or those that glow were the most productive. No salmon were reported from any station yet and that is typical during the early cold water season. Shore anglers fishing for Lake Trout near river mouths reported slow fishing and very few fish caught this week. Some anglers were still fishing the rivers for Steelhead and reported a fair number of fish still in the rivers. With recent substantial rains, rivers were high and water temps cool.
