The Red River Basin Flood Damage Reduction Work Group (FDRWG) is a multi-agency/stakeholder group that collaborates to plan and fund projects providing flood resiliency and natural resource enhancements in Minnesota’s portion of the Red River Basin.
In April 2024 the FDRWG released two five-minute videos that provide an overview of its purposes and activities as well as information on projects developed using the Project Team process.
The two videos can be viewed on the FDRWG web site. Scroll below the FDRWG header and see the following videos that you can view on the site or in the full screen format:
- FDRWG Overview (5:23 minutes)
- FDRWG Projects (4:15 minutes)

Come learn in person and interact with other local officials and professionals involved in aspects of floodplain management (i.e., surveyors, consulting engineers/planners, Realtors, lenders/agents).
We plan to cover floodplain management basics and FEMA map basics, including a map reading and interpretation exercise. Other topics include: floodplain administration 101, utilizing web-based flood maps and tools, dealing with nonconformities, making Substantial Improvement (SI)/Substantial Damage (SD) determinations, and community post-disaster responsibilities.

FEMA just published the third coloring book in the “Safer Communities” series. “My Tall House” teaches young children (mainly ages four to eight) how elevation can help make homes and communities safer. You can read the 11-page book in English or Spanish. It includes:
- A series of coloring pages that share a short story about friends who rebuild their playhouse after a flood.
- A glossary of age-appropriate terms to expand vocabulary.
- Activities that kids can do with an adult.
The series, available on FEMA.gov, also includes “My Rain Garden” and “My Safe Yard.”
