Weekly Stream Conditions
Rivers remain mostly covered with ice with very low water levels. Some rivers are currently inaccessible due to rock bars at the confluence with Lake Superior (i.e., Lester River near Duluth). We expect these rivers will open up quickly with spring snowmelt and rain, and we will continue to monitor this over the next few weeks (everyone please do a rain dance!). Minnesota DNR staff visited the Knife River Trap today in preparation for spring trap operations. The trap will remain closed as the extended forecast is continued cold temperatures with overnights below freezing over the next week.

Smelt
The smelt run typically does not begin until river temperatures near 40ºF. More information about smelt is provided on our smelt fact sheet. Please be aware of the high levels of PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) discovered in rainbow smelt in Lake Superior and understand the potential risks associated with the new rainbow smelt consumption advisory.
