Ecological and Native Plant Community Trainings

A group of prairie practitioners learn native plants on a remnant prairie in southern Minnesota.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is offering in-person training in plant identification and the Field Guides to the Native Plant Communities of Minnesota, and how they can be used to help inform management decisions.


There will be three field classes and two workshops with a classroom and field component. For details about each class including registration links, please see below. All workshops are free.

 

Target Audience: These classes are geared toward natural resource professionals working in forests, prairies and wetlands, but are open to anyone.

Southeast Session: Prairie Plant Identification and Management Course-- Beaver Creek Wildlife Management Area, Fillmore County

The day will focus on plant identification across different prairie types, classifying native plant communities while discussing site condition, quality, and management options.

Northwest Session: Prairie Plant Identification and Management Course--Twin Lakes Wildlife Management Area, Kittson County

Minnesota Grasses Workshop--Itasca State Park, Clearwater County

This half classroom and half field one-day class will introduce participants to grasses found in Minnesota woods, woodland edges, wetlands edges and disturbed areas. The class will review identification characteristics and share how some species might help in evaluating the ecological integrity of an area.

Minnesota Ferns Workshop--Jay Cooke State Park, Carlton County

This half classroom and half field one-day class will introduce participants to ferns and lycophytes found in Minnesota woods, woodland and cliff edges, and disturbed areas. The class will review identification characteristics and share how some species might help to inform decisions regarding the ecological integrity of an area.

Some classes will fill up quickly, so please sign-up early! Course instructors will send additional information on class logistics two weeks prior to the scheduled event. There is no cost for these classes, but participants may be encouraged to bring specific resources to each training event (e.g., field guides, hand lens, clipboard, etc.).
