Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Moderate northeast winds substantially reduced fishing pressure this week, as did the depth of the thermocline. Surface temperatures remained in the mid-60s, and the thermocline was very deep at over 150 feet in many areas. No reports of Salmon were received this week. Lake Trout and Siscowet were caught jigging and trolling in 150-200 feet of water close to the bottom. The Lake Trout ranged from 15-30 inches and averaged around 22 inches. Spoons and flasher flies caught most of the fish, with green and orange being good colors, although gold and orange spoons also caught a few fish. There was very light fishing pressure on the St. Louis River Estuary this week and no anglers were interviewed. Lower Shore stream flows are looking good for fishing, but water temps are still a bit warm.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Weather conditions were poor during this reporting period with strong eastern winds throughout the week. Surface water temps were warm averaging between 59 and 61 °F at all stations and the thermocline was 100+ feet down. Electronics showed Lake Trout were congregated in deep near shore waters suspended below the thermocline. Anglers reported that the Lake Trout they caught were gorged on small Herring and Smelt. Many Pink Salmon were actively spawning in Upper Shore rivers, but the majority were looking very ragged. Most rivers were low, but rivers further down the shore were slightly higher. Angler pressure was light at all stations this week. The last day of the Lake Trout Season is October 8th this year and it reopens on December 1st.
