Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Moderate to strong northeast winds greatly reduced fishing pressure this week and very few anglers were interviewed. Surface water temps remained in the mid-60s, and the thermocline also remained very deep at over 100 feet in many areas. No Salmon were reported, but Lake Trout and Siscowet were caught jigging and trolling in 110-190 feet of water closer to the bottom. The Lake Trout ranged from 15-30 inches and averaged around 22 inches. Spoons and flasher flies caught most of the fish, with green and orange being good colors, although gold and orange spoons also caught a few fish. Heavy rains brought flood conditions to lower shore streams and lots of debris out into the lake.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Recent weather and wind conditions have held warm 60 °F surface water along the entire Upper Shore. Anglers with temp reading equipment reported the warm water extends down 100+ feet. Anglers equipped with downriggers, along with other deep reaching techniques such as wire line, reported good fishing for Lake Trout close to shore in deep water fishing near or below the 100 foot thermocline. Some very nice Lake Trout over 10 pounds were caught at all stations as fish were starting to congregate in near shore waters. No reports of Salmon being caught were received this week besides small juvenile Cohos in the 10-14 inch range. Pink Salmon have entered rivers and were actively spawning in recent days. The warm weather seems to have sped up the process and reports of spawned out Pinks lying dead in rivers have been received. While rain brought some relief to Upper Shore rivers, the larger amounts of rain generally passed to the south and water levels are still moderately low. With warm lake water temps being held in place, shore anglers have reported little success.
