Procrastinators Alert: Never do tomorrow what you can today!
Fall colors are coming fast and furious this year. While the shortening day length is the foremost factor determining the onset of the fall color season, local weather conditions – such as summer drought, temperature, or an early hard frost – can impact the beginning, length and brilliance of fall colors. This year, we are ahead of fall color progression compared to last year, so don’t delay! Put on your flannel, grab a camera, and head out to enjoy Minnesota's most colorful season.Â

The north central area of Minnesota could pass as a giant tree-related classroom with its stunning display of maple, oak, pine and evergreen. This region features three state parks that make for a fantastic fall adventure. Start with Scenic State Park which earns its name with views of towering white and red virgin pines. While at the park, take the Chase Point Trail for hypnotic lake views as the wind whistles through the giant pines.
Next, head south to the second "S" of your journey, Schoolcraft State Park. A two-mile hiking trail will take you around the entire perimeter, through stands of old-growth red and white pines, open oak groves and aside river marshes alive with migrating birds. The campground is closed for the season, but the picnic grounds or boat access site are great places to unwind.Â
The final "S" stop is Savanna Portage State Park. Take a walk around Loon Lake for stunning fall views, the trail is a one-mile loop. Watch your step while hiking around the lake as there are lots of roots and rocks! Once you pass the park office, continue straight on Lake Place Road, and once you get to the Y in the road take a left. This will bring you to Loon Lake.

Calling all Indiana Jones’ enthusiasts! A day in the life of an archaeologist actually has nothing to do with guns, gems or snakes (okay, maybe an occasional snake). Get a glimpse into the life of true heroes – archaeologists that help us discover more about the long and varied history of the lands we now call Minnesota. Travel to Mille Lacs Kathio State Park on Saturday, September 30 to enjoy a full day of demonstrations and activities highlighting the rich heritage surrounding Mille Lacs Lake.
This weekend’s Harvest Moon will be the last supermoon of 2023. The Harvest Moon, which marks the end of summer and the beginning of fall, achieves peak brightness this weekend on Friday, September 29. The Harvest Moon is also known as the Leaves Changing Color Moon and Falling Leaves Moon by the Ojibwe. The Dakota use the names Moon When the Rice is Laid Up to Dry and Corn Harvest Moon. The extraordinary red tint of the moon this time of year is caused by the close timing of the moon rise with the sun set.Â
Head out to Flandrau State Park’s Glow Hike Event this Saturday for an extraordinary Harvest Moon experience. Take a low-key evening hike on an illuminated trail and enjoy warm refreshments around a campfire to celebrate the changing of the seasons. Arrive early to check out the goat herd that is helping to control invasive species throughout the park.
