Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Northeast wind held the thermocline down around 100 feet most days this week. Water temps hovered in the low to mid-60s from Duluth to Two Harbors, pushing fish deep. Very few Salmon of any species were caught this week. The Lake Trout fishing was pretty good and the fish caught ranged from 15-30 inches and averaged around 22 inches. Spoons and flasher flies caught most of the fish, with green and orange being good colors, although gold and orange spoons also caught a few fish north of Two Harbors. The most successful trolling anglers fished deep into the thermocline, often 120+ feet down. Jigging still worked well on deep structure in 100-200 feet of water. Fishing pressure in the St. Louis River Estuary was low and fishing was slow at best. No reports were received from anglers about Lower Shore stream conditions this week. Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps were 60-61 °F at all Upper Shore stations this week and the thermocline was as deep as 100 feet down. Anglers reported success trolling spoons and flasher/fly rigs near the thermocline making temp reading equipment very useful. Anglers reported very slow fishing closer to the surface. Lake Trout fishing was good at all stations, especially near Grand Marais where many 3-8 pound fish and a few up to 18 pounds were reported. Most of these Lake Trout were caught relatively close to shore suspended in deep water. No Chinook Salmon and only a few 10-14 inch Coho Salmon were reported. Pink Salmon were almost absent in the lake as most have either entered their spawning rivers or were staging to do so. Good numbers of Pink Salmon were observed in the Brule, Devil Track, Cascade, and Temperance Rivers. Angler presence on the rivers was light but increased slightly as the Pink Salmon began to spawn more aggressively and were more easily spotted in shallow waters.
