Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Northeast winds kept the warmer water near Duluth this week, and the thermocline around 100 feet down. This concentrated Salmon and Lake Trout, around 90-110 feet down in 100-150 feet of water near Duluth. Anglers trolling north of Knife River caught most of their fish near structure on the bottom or 30-50 feet down, depending on the day. Most of the Lake Trout caught were 19-23 inches, with a few as large as 28 inches. One Chinook Salmon measured nearly 30 inches and 10 pounds. The Pink Salmon caught were as large as 19 inches and the Coho Salmon were up to 27 inches and nearly 8 pounds. Anglers did best trolling near the thermocline with spoons and flasher/fly rigs. Blue and green were good colors, especially for the trolling flies. Glow-in-the-dark spoons and flashers can be effective at those depths, especially with some orange mixed in. Whole or partial smelt improved success with flasher/fly rigs. Some Lake Trout were caught jigging on structure in 60-180 feet of water further up the shore. A couple of 21-24 inch Steelhead were reported, primarily caught trolling 30-50 feet down. St. Louis River Estuary fishing pressure was low over the week and anglers reported catching a few Northerns and Smallmouth Bass but no Muskies or Walleye.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps were 59-62 °F over the week. Anglers reported this warm water as far down as 100 feet. Lake Trout fishing has been steady from all stations. Anglers reported some success for Lake Trout suspended in the water column but more success deeper down in the 100-150 foot range. The suspended Lake Trout were difficult to pattern as they were generally not related to structure. Most of the Lake Trout caught were 22-26 inches with a few larger fish reported as well. Pink Salmon were reduced in numbers this week and are likely beginning to stage near the river mouths for their fall spawning runs. The Pink Salmon caught were 16-19 inches long and primarily caught in the top 70 feet of the water column. Very few Coho and Chinook Salmon were caught this week, but a few nice Cohos were reported from Twin Points. Upper Shore rivers and streams remain fairly low and no Salmon have been reported yet.
