Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
With northeast winds followed by west winds this week, the thermocline was anywhere from 15-90 feet down, moving the bite higher in the water column during the week. Most of the Lake Trout caught were 19-23 inches, with a few as large as 29 inches. The number of Chinook and Coho Salmon caught was low this week but they are still being caught. As usual, anglers did best trolling near the thermocline with spoons and flasher/fly rigs. Blue and green were good colors, especially for the trolling flies. Glow-in-the-dark spoons and flashers were effective at those depths as well. Whole or partial smelt improved success with flasher/fly rigs. Some Lake Trout were also caught jigging bottom structure in 80-180 feet of water. Pink Salmon were active this week, especially from Knife River to Two Harbors. St. Louis River Estuary fishing pressure remains low.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Upper Shore surface water temps were 58-62 °F during this reporting period. Generally, water temps were a degree or two cooler near Grand Marais and Hovland compared to Twin Points and Silver Bay. Fishing has been fair at all stations for Lake Trout, and most of the fish caught were 20-28 inches. Lake Trout were scattered throughout the water column and most fish were suspended anywhere from the surface to 200 feet down. A few anglers also reported seeing good numbers of larger fish on their electronics down to 300 feet. Flasher/fly rigs and spoons both produced fish over the week. Anglers reported good numbers of 16-19 inch Pink Salmon at all stations. Most Pinks were caught in the top 50 feet of the water column, with very close to the surface. Some anglers have tried to upsize their lures to avoid them, but this tactic was not very successful in dissuading their bite. Coho and Chinook Salmon were few and far between over the week with only a couple reported from Silver Bay.
