Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Northeast winds reduced fishing pressure early in the week. The Salmon are still growing rapidly, with Cohos as large as 6 pounds and Chinooks over 16 pounds caught. Lake Trout sized was similar to previous weeks with a larger average size caught after the northeast wind set up the thermocline near Duluth. The thermocline was down 80 feet in some areas and concentrated both Lake Trout and Salmon. Anglers did best trolling near the thermocline with spoons and flasher/fly rigs. Blue and green were good colors, especially for the trolling flies, and pink and orange also caught some fish. Further up the shore from Duluth, a few fish were caught off deep structure in 110-180 feet of water, but conditions were still in a state of flux, with surface temps fluctuating between the mid-50's and 60’s depending on the wind. St. Louis estuary fishing pressure was still low with primarily pleasure boaters launching out of Rice’s Point.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps warmed into the mid 60’s at all Upper Shore stations during this reporting period, but strong winds blew the warm water off-shore and surface temps fell to 39-44 °F by the end of the week. Anglers from all stations reported difficult fishing over the week. Lake Trout were dispersed from deep bottom structure and anglers targeting these usually productive deep water locations found very few concentrations of fish. A few larger Lake Trout were recorded from all stations including a 27 pound Laker from Hovland. Most of these larger fish were suspended in the water column and often near the surface but they were difficult to pattern. Anglers from Grand Marais and Taconite Harbor reported Lake Trout were caught in good numbers close to shore, but this shallow bite was sporadic at best. Pink Salmon have been increasing in numbers and in size with most fish measuring 16-18 inches. Very few Coho Salmon were observed or reported from any station. Chinook Salmon were fewer in number during this week. Anglers also reported catching a few very large Steelhead while trolling for Lake Trout and Salmon. Brook Trout were targeted by shore anglers in Grand Marais Harbor and they reported catching some nice sized fish from 14-18 inches and seeing some even larger ones.
