Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
The water warmed into the mid 60's as far north as Two Harbors, spreading out the Salmon. They have grown quickly this year, with Cohos nearing 5 pounds and reports of Chinooks over 16 pounds. Occasional Pink Salmon are still being caught, especially further north up the shore. Fishing near Duluth was most successful in 90-120 feet of water. A few Lake Trout were reported in the 12-16 pound range, though most were 19-23 inches long. The thermocline was anywhere from 45 to 65 feet down, depending on the wind, but most fish were caught 30-65 feet down on spoons or flasher/fly rigs. Blue and green were good colors, especially for the trolling flies, though pink and orange still caught some fish. From McQuade to Two Harbors some fish were caught just off the bottom on deep structure in 110-180 feet of water, but it appears that conditions are changing, and fish are not as concentrated.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps warmed into the 54-58 °F range at all Upper Shore stations this week. Anglers from Silver Bay and Twin Points reported fair fishing for Lake Trout in the 3-5 pound range. The Lake Trout in the Silver Bay area were scattered but in good numbers and a few larger fish were caught far from shore. Near Grand Marais anglers reported lower numbers of Lake Trout with most caught in 100+ feet of water. Anglers from all stations reported catching 13-18 inch Pink Salmon in good numbers in the top 50 feet of the water column. A few Chinook Salmon were caught in the top 100 feet of the water column from Taconite Harbor and Grand Marais and they were 8-18 pounds. No Steelhead or Coho Salmon have been reported yet by Upper Shore anglers.
