Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
The surface bite using stickbaits and spoons was still primarily in the Larsmont and Two Harbors area, although the wind kept pushing the warm water back to the southwest. Anglers from McQuade to Two Harbors primarily caught fish trolling in the top 30 feet of water, with some Lake Trout caught trolling or jigging near structure in 110-200 feet of water. The Pink Salmon appear to be hanging around and comprised the bulk of the Salmon harvested over the week. Closer to Duluth, the thermocline was around 50 feet down, with trollers finding Lake Trout and a few Coho Salmon in the thermocline over 90-150 feet of water. Northeast winds are predicted for Friday the 28th, which will likely push the thermocline deeper. Adding smelt to trolling rigs does not seem necessary yet, as spoons were still catching many of the deeper fish. St. Louis River Estuary anglers found a few Walleye and Northern Pike trolling worm harnesses and using jigging raps.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Upper shore anglers reported surface water temps have begun to rise more noticeably. The surface temps at all stations reached or exceeded 50 F on some occasions, but 39-42 °F surface temps in the morning were also reported. Anglers out of Silver Bay and Twin Points reported Lake Trout scattered throughout the deep-water column. Most of the Lake trout caught were 18-25 inch few larger fish reported. Grand Marais anglers reported slow fishing over the past week and Lake Trout were fewer in numbers but still in the typical deep water structure locations. Pink salmon were caught from all stations in light numbers and were 13-17 inches long. Very few Coho or Chinook Salmon were reported but that will likely change in the coming days if the water continues to warm.
