Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Sporadic rain kept angling pressure low over the week. Nearshore water temps were 55-60°F leading to lower catch rates for most boat anglers. The thermocline was anywhere from 30-60 feet down near McQuade. Fishing stickbaits, spoons, and flasher fly rigs have all produced fish. Anglers reported catching a few Salmon between McQuade and Two Harbors. Many of the smaller Salmon in the 12-16 inch range were likely Pinks, but differentiating between Salmon of this size can be difficult (see link below for help identifying fish). Lake Trout fishing has been decent, and most fish were around 22 inches long. Fishing pressure on the St. Louis River Estuary and from shore has been extremely low.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Upper shore anglers reported cold surface water near shore at all stations. Near Grand Marais and Tofte, morning surface water temps were 39-41°F rising to the mid 40’s during the warm afternoons. Silver Bay anglers have reported fair fishing for Lake Trout in 140-200 feet of water. A few Silver Bay anglers went far off-shore and found water temps in the low 50’s and caught large Lake Trout. Grand Marais anglers report fair numbers Lake Trout in 100-180 feet of water. While most Lake Trout were caught near to the bottom, increasing numbers of fish are being caught suspended through the water column. Trolling bright colored spoons with downriggers was the most commonly used technique but jigging produced some fish as well. Anglers at all stations reported catching a few Pink Salmon in the 12-15 inch range. One nice Chinook Salmon was caught from Grand Marais weighing 13 pounds, but no other Salmon have been reported yet.
