Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
West winds pushed the warmer water offshore this week, leaving 40-45 °F water near shore, and making the surface bite elusive. The thermocline was 30-50 feet down near McQuade before the wind pushed the warmer layer out. Spoons and stickbaits in the top 30 feet of water worked the best but a few fish were caught on flasher fly rigs. Pink and purple were the most productive colors, but orange and green are still good colors to have on hand. Lures with holographic flash helped some anglers hook up. Pink Salmon from 12-16 inches were caught from McQuade to Two Harbors. A few large Chinook Salmon, up to 16 pounds, were caught offshore near Duluth. The St. Louis River Estuary fishing for Walleye was slow over the week, but a few fish were caught trolling stickbaits on the edge of shipping channels. Shore fishing north of McQuade has been very poor, even from the Two Harbors break wall.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
During the week, southwest and northwest winds pushed the warmer water offshore and surface water temps near shore were 39-43 °F. Anglers from Silver Bay reported decent fishing for Lake Trout over the last week. Fish have shifted down in the water column and are mainly being caught in 100-200 feet of water. The Lake Trout caught were primarily in the 18-24 inch range. Anglers from Taconite Harbor and Grand Marais reported fair fishing for Lake Trout in 140-190 feet of water, near bottom structure. Anglers from all stations reported they are starting to see more Pink Salmon and the majority of the fish caught in the top 50 feet of the water column and were 12-16 inches. No reports of Coho or Chinook Salmon have been received yet.
