Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
Most days had decent fishing weather this week, allowing for higher fishing pressure and boating traffic. Fishing pressure on the Lower Shore was the highest out of McQuade, but overall catch rates remained somewhat lower than past weeks. The thermocline was around 40 feet down near McQuade. The warm water and surface bite moved as far north as Larsmont over the week, though the leading edge produced more Pink Salmon than anything else. Spoons and stickbaits in the top 30 feet of water worked well from McQuade to Two Harbors and a few fish were also caught on flashers and peanut flies. Orange, pink, and green were all productive colors, but purple was the consistent producer. Anglers trolling near Duluth had to fish 40 to 60 feet down to find the fish. Anglers reported catching fish both close to shore and miles offshore as the warm water moved north. St. Louis River Estuary fishing for Walleye was generally slow this week, though a few anglers found some on the edges of shipping channels, trolling stickbaits or nightcrawler harnesses. Several White Bass and Channel Catfish were reported but nothing of notable size.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Anglers reported offshore surface water in the mid 40’s near Grand Marais and Hovland and over 50 °F at Silver Bay with some cooler water holding closer to shore. Silver Bay anglers reported much better fishing for Lake Trout this week with some big fish starting to show up. Lake Trout were found scattered throughout the water column with good numbers of 22-26 inch fish in the top 100 feet of water. Anglers reported Lake Trout up to 20 pounds caught from Silver Bay. Presenting spoons and plugs with planer boards, dipsy divers, and downriggers all produced fish. A few Pink Salmon were reported from Silver Bay and Twin Points. Most were 12 to 14 inches and thin. No Coho or Chinook Salmon have been reported yet. Further up the shore, near Grand Marais and Hovland, anglers reported slow fishing.
