Lower Shore: Duluth to Two Harbors
The water is warming near Duluth, with temperatures as high as 50 °F up to 50 feet down in the water column being reported. Anglers fishing from McQuade to Two Harbors have still been targeting Lake Trout on deep structure by jigging or trolling spoons. Near Duluth, spoons and stickbaits in the top 50 feet of the water column worked well for Lake Trout and Coho Salmon. No Chinook Salmon were reported by interviewed anglers over the last week but they are still being caught. St. Louis River Estuary anglers caught Walleye in the 16-23 inch range in the harbor using worm harnesses, jigs, and stickbaits.
Upper Shore: Twin Points to Hovland
Surface water temps were reported to be 36-39 °F over the last week. Anglers found some success targeting Lake Trout in 120-200 feet of water trolling spoons and downriggers near structure and on flats in these depth ranges. Shore anglers reported limited success with one of the better opportunities being to target Brook Trout in the warmer waters found in harbors, marinas, and river mouths. The Lake Trout caught over the last week were 18-26 inches and 2-5 pounds typically. No reports of salmon have been received from anglers at any station yet. Angler pressure has been very light at all access locations with most anglers just beginning to ready their boats for the summer. Periods of heavy smoke from Canadian wildfires has also kept people indoors more than usual. River water temps have averaged in the upper 50's in the mornings and the upper 60's during the warm afternoon hours. Rivers water levels are low and very clear.
