Species Key:
STT = Unclipped (wild-produced) Steelhead Rainbow Trout (Superior Strain)
CST = Clipped (stocked) Steelhead Rainbow Trout (Superior Strain)
KAM = Clipped (stocked) Kamloops Rainbow Trout (Kamloops Strain)
Note about Knife River Trap: The Knife River Traps does not provide an accurate index of returns of clipped (stocked) Rainbow Trout. Clipped Rainbow Trout are not stocked in the Knife River and not expected to return there as adults. Any clipped fish captured in the Knife River Trap are strays from other stocked rivers (Lester and French rivers).
Note about French River Trap: The French River Trap totals shown here do not accurately reflect the total adult Rainbow Trout that returned to French River this spring. In previous years, seining the pool under Scenic HWY 61 was effective capture method for indexing return of Rainbow Trout (steelhead and Kamloops) at French River. This spring, seining at French River has been largely ineffective due to a large boulder in the middle of the channel that snags the seine and allows fish to escape. The French River adult trap, the stationary metal structure upstream of the HWY 61 bridge, has caught few fish this spring (similar to previous years). This week we discovered that many Rainbow Trout had jumped over the adult trap at some point this spring, likely when flows overtopped the trap and before it was safe to operate in late-April or the first week of May. The DNR crew captured over 40 "jumpers" upstream of the adult trap this week and estimated that at least that many or more were also present but not able to be captured. Furthermore, last spring we tested the efficiency of the adult trap and discovered that the current design creates a velocity barrier through the trap opening that likely limits or entirely prohibits fish to enter the trap, particularly during high flows, and that fish that enter the trap can escape (we tagged fish and put them in the trap, checked the next day and they were gone). These issues will be discussed and likely addressed for future years.
Smelt Update
The smelt run appears to be over for spring 2023. Smelt were much more abundant at Park Point and Lester River this spring than the last few years. We wish you all the best and look forward to the smelt run of 2024! More information about smelt is provided on our smelt fact sheet. Please be aware of the high levels of PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) discovered in rainbow smelt in Lake Superior and understand the potential risks associated with the new rainbow smelt consumption advisory.
