Update For ArcMap Users

MNIT Enterprise has started rolling out the silent uninstall of any ArcMap software older than version 10.8.2. This is important to support MNIT’s mission to maintain current software and security on state assets. You may discover that your computer was on that silent uninstall list. No need to panic!

If you find you are missing ArcMap and want it back, ArcGIS Desktop 10.8.2 (ArcMap) is available in Software Center. Users will see this in the Applications list (it is not listed in Updates). You will need to be connected to the network (or use VPN if working from home) to run the install.

This ArcGIS Desktop 10.8.2 installation defaults to a Basic license level. Although advanced licenses and extensions are available by request, the GIS Section recommends that users who need advanced features migrate to ArcGIS Pro.

ArcGIS Desktop 10.8x is the last version of ArcMap that ESRI will release. ESRI will retire its support for ArcMap on March 1, 2026. Although there may be minor patches (10.8.2 is available now), ESRI has no plans for another major release.

Please contact GIS Support if you have concerns about this action.

Calculate Field tool

ArcGIS Pro Tip: Create New Field with Field Calculator

If your workflow includes creating a new field and then calculating that new field, then you're going to LOVE this shortcut in ArcGIS Pro.

How do you do this?

  • Open an attribute table view,
  • Right click on any field and choose "Calculate Field"
  • In the dialog box, simply type in a new Field Name and choose the Field Type
  • Add your field calculation statement, and Apply!

The field is created and the calculation is done at the same time! Attribute field calculation is a powerful GIS tool! For some examples and tips on using field calculator, see online documentation from ESRI here!

Do you have a GIS Tip? We'd love to hear from you! Share your tips or ideas with the DNR GIS Community Team. It's a great place to share and learn! Next time you do something fun or cool in ArcGIS feel free to share with us all; we're all virtual GIS cube mates in the DNR GIS Community Team!
