Garry Bennett Joins Floodplain Management and Dam Safety Programs

Garry Bennett photo

We are excited to have Garry join the floodplain and dam safety team. Garry brings a wealth of experience, having worked as an Area Hydrologist at Minnesota DNR for over fifteen years at both the Thief River Falls and Hutchinson Area Offices. His experience working with local units of government gives him a solid foundation for connecting with communities participating in the National Flood Insurance Program.

Garry will join current floodplain management staff and provide greater capacity in our ongoing efforts to ensure effective floodplain management in the state. His focus will include: technical assistance, monitoring efforts, and training/outreach for local governments and property owners. Garry will also be supporting dam owners on the development and implementation of emergency action plans for high-hazard dams.

In Search of a Few Good Area Hydrologists

Do you have what it takes?

Minnesota map showing region 4 in southwest portion of state

DNR Region 4 (see map) is currently looking to fill three Area Hydrologist vacancies for the Hutchinson, Sakatah (West), and Spicer work areas (location is negotiable within the region).

These positions exist to ensure the sustainability of the State’s water resources through management of the activities of the public within a geographic work area comprised of three or more watersheds.  For land use programs, including shoreland and floodplain management, the work area comprises four or more counties. These positions complete work assignments that involve state-wide projects and policy. These positions also act as lead agency contacts for Clean Water project coordination and outreach with local government units and natural resource partners.

For more information and to apply:

Go to https://mn.gov/mmb/careers/ and search for “NR Area Hydrologist” or Job ID 61337.

Closing date is January 5, 2023.

NFIP Extended to Dec. 30, 2022

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has had many short extensions since the last five-year extension that expired Sept. 30, 2017. The latest extension was set to expire Dec. 23, 2022. On Dec. 23, the President signed legislation passed by Congress that extends the NFIP’s authorization to Dec. 30, 2022.

FEMA's Congressional Reauthorization for the NFIP page should have the latest updates. FEMA reports that they and Congress have never failed to honor the flood insurance contracts in place with NFIP policyholders. Should the NFIP’s authorization lapse, FEMA would still have authority to ensure the payment of valid flood claims with available funds.

However, FEMA would stop selling and renewing policies for millions of properties in communities across the nation. Nationwide, the National Association of Realtors estimated in 2017 that a lapse might impact approximately 40,000 home sale closings per month.
