Information on Required Annual Training for DNR Employees

You may have read in the Spotlight or heard from your supervisor that all employees will be required to complete annual training starting in October. That time is now! You have been enrolled in the required courses (see Required FY22 Training Checklist for details) through the Enterprise Learning Management (ELM) system*. You are expected to complete the training by December 31.

All courses are online, and can be completed any time starting tomorrow, October 1 after 7 a.m. in ELM in Self Service*. The training should take a total of about 2 hours 30 minutes for all employees, and an additional 1 hour for supervisors and managers.

New this year is the "Workplace Violence Prohibited Policy" acknowledgement, required of all employees by Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB). Also, this year’s list of required courses does not include MNIT Security Awareness Training. This training will be available at a later date.

*We’ve recently been made aware of technical issues with MMB’s Preventing Sexual Harassment courses for all employees, and for Managers and Supervisors. As a result, we’ve delayed enrolling DNR employees in these two courses. Once the issues are resolved, DNR employees will be enrolled and an ELM generated notification confirming enrollment will be sent.

For the best training experience in the upgraded ELM environment, follow these steps:

  • Clear your cache. For step-by-step instructions how to clear the cache, please see the Clearing Browsing History and Cache Quick Reference Guide and Video Tutorial.
  • Follow this State of Minnesota Self Service Portal Sign-in link to log in. If you had a browser bookmark for Self Service set up, delete this bookmark and create a new bookmark with this link.
  • Complete each training course at a time when you can give it your full attention. Do not have any other tabs open while completing a course. If you need to take a break or step away from the training, exit the training so it marks where you left off (bookmarks) before your computer times out due to inactivity.

To access and complete the courses, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to the Self Service portal.
  2. Select “Learning Management” tile
  3. Select “My Learning” tile
  4. You will see the full list of the annual required training you’ve been enrolled in (in addition to any other classes you are currently enrolled in) under the “Current” tab.
  5. To start a course, select the “Launch” button.
  • Please note that the All Staff Annual Safety Training has two modules, both of which must be completed in order for the course to be marked as complete.  After completing and exiting the Fire Prevention module, ELM will open a page with the name of the second module: select “Launch” to proceed.

Other Information Regarding Annual Required Training

  • New employees who start or return to work with the DNR after September 30, will be required to complete these courses as part of their onboarding process, using the new employee checklist and training matrix to identify and enroll in training. They will not be auto-enrolled in these courses.
  • Seasonal employees are encouraged to complete the training before going on seasonal layoff, however, the training may also be completed during onboarding when returning to work.
  • The Required Annual Training list does not represent ALL required training. Various other courses (such as defensive driver, purchasing, and job-specific safety courses) might also be required throughout the year depending on your position. Please check with your supervisor to determine which courses are relevant to you.
  • To request a reasonable accommodation and/or alternative format of these trainings, please send a request to the DNR ELM mailbox.
  • Employees who are unable to access the online training should discuss options with their supervisor.
  • For more information on training available, visit Learning and Development Intranet page, and review the updated training matrix located there.
  • Volunteers and contract employees (Greenview or Conservation Corps) will not be able to complete courses in ELM but can view transcripts upon request.
  • Need assistance? Please reach out via the DNR ELM support mailbox for questions about the completing the training requirements, or to our DNR Learning and Development Team for training questions in general.
