Four New Groundwater Atlas Publications

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has published the following.

Map of Winona County showing karst features

Groundwater Atlas of Winona County

This atlas covers groundwater flow patterns, chemistry, sensitivity to pollution, and more. It expands on the geologic atlas previously published by the Minnesota Geological Survey. The web page includes links to the report, 2 map plates, and GIS files.

For other completed counties consult the County Atlas Status List. For Questions about this atlas contact John Barry, Hydrogeologist, 651-259-5660, John.Barry@state.mn.us

Karst Landscape Units of Houston and Winona Counties

Landscape units are categorized into karst, pseudokarst, or nonkarst based on their hydrology, form, and underlying geology and are useful for water and land use planning and management. The report, map plates (HoustonWinona), and GIS files are found on the web page Springs, Springsheds, and Karst.

For questions about this report contact John Barry, Hydrogeologist, 651-259-5660, John.Barry@state.mn.us

Groundwater Atlas User Guide

This guide contains a brief preparation in groundwater and an approach to reading the Part B atlases. It can be found with the atlases on the County Atlas Status List page.

This page also contains the Geologic Atlas User Guide, a more in-depth description of the entire program.

Minnesota map showing the location of the 6 provinces

Minnesota Groundwater Provinces 2021

This is an update to the 2001 version, which summarizes regional differences in aquifers and general groundwater availability. The six provinces are based on unique combinations of bedrock and glacial geology, the primary factors that control potential groundwater supply.

The web page contains a summary, PDF, and link to GIS files. For questions contact Jim Berg, Hydrogeologist, 651-259-5680, Jim.a.Berg@state.mn.us.
