Take a Kid Fishing Weekend is June 7-9

Take a Kid Fishing Weekend is coming up!

From Friday, June 7, to Sunday, June 9, Minnesota residents can fish without licenses if they take children 15 or younger fishing.

While Minnesotans 15 and younger don’t need fishing licenses any time of the year, Take a Kid Fishing Weekend is a way for adults and kids to fish together without the step of buying a license. Anyone who wants to learn how to fish can visit the DNR website at mndnr.gov/GoFishing.

Fishing gear is available to borrow at state parks and the DNR’s I Can Fish program teaches the basics of fishing and runs throughout the summer at state parks. You can find more information on the DNR website about these and other hands-on fishing activities.

Collect muskie scales on Lake Vermilion

Are you planning to fish for muskies on Lake Vermilion this summer? The DNR needs help collecting muskie scales.

Especially needed are anglers who can catch multiple muskies on Vermilion – and provide multiple samples. These scales will help estimate the number of adult muskies in the lake and provide a better understanding of muskie movement and behavior. You can find more details about how to participate on the DNR website.

Find fishing information

You can find the information you need about learning to fish, regulations, where to fish, aquatic invasive species, contacting a conservation officer and more on the DNR fishing page at mndnr.gov/fishing. Information about life jacket requirements and other boat and water safety topics is available at mndnr.gov/boatingsafety
