 On July 4, 2025, the President signed a bill into law that brings several changes to Medicaid, a federal health insurance program called Medical Assistance (MA) in Minnesota.
First, there are no changes for people who:
Get coverage based on a disability
- Are 65 or older
- Are 20 or younger
- Are pregnant.
When will changes happen?
The first change starts in October 2026, and most happen in January 2027. The last change starts October 1, 2028.
What are the changes and who is affected?
We will explain each change, who is affected and when it will start.
First change: Oct. 1, 2026
What will change: Eligibility for some immigrants
Who is impacted: Only certain lawful permanent residents, Cuban and Haitian entrants, and Compact of Free Association (COFA) migrants will be eligible for Medical Assistance.
Next change: Jan. 1, 2027
What will change: Work requirements
Who is impacted: People ages 21 to 64 who do not have dependent children, are not pregnant and are not receiving Medical Assistance based on a disability.
Next change: Jan. 1, 2027
What will change: Renewals every six months instead of once a year.
Who is impacted: People ages 21 to 64 who do not have dependent children, are not pregnant and are not receiving Medical Assistance based on a disability.
Next change: Jan. 1, 2027
What will change: Shorter periods of retroactive coverage
Who is impacted: People who apply for Medical Assistance on or after Jan. 1, 2027.
Last change: Oct. 1, 2028
What will change: Cost sharing on some services.
Who is impacted: Some people ages 21 to 64 who do not have dependent children, are not pregnant and are not receiving Medical Assistance based on disability.
Do you need to do anything?
For now, you do not need to do anything to keep your Medical Assistance.
Watch your mail for an envelope with a circle in blue when it’s time to renew. Complete and return your renewal right away.
