DHS offers free Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) training for mental health professionals

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to treat posttraumatic stress and related emotional and behavioral difficulties in children and adolescents. Thanks to a grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS), this TF-CBT training is free for qualified participants. Mental health professionals will gain a comprehensive understanding of TF-CBT and its application in therapy through four days of training and 14 consultations.

TF-CBTWeb is an online prerequisite. If you are accepted for this training, you will need to complete the 10-hour prerequisite, which costs $35. Your certificate of completion would be due by Oct. 20, 2025. If this is not received prior to the training, you will not be able to attend.

Event Details:

  • Dates: Oct. 23 & 29 (Basic Training) and Dec. 3 & 5 (Advanced Training)
  • Time: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. CDT
  • Where: Both sessions will be fully virtual on Zoom
  • Registration: TF-CBT Training Application

We ask that participants meet the following criteria:

  • Our TF-CBT training program is designed for Minnesota-based therapists to learn the basics of TF-CBT as well as advanced applications of TF-CBT to special populations/clinical presentations such as foster care, African-American youth, youth on the autism spectrum, LGBTQ+ youth, traumatic grief, youth with problematic sexual behaviors and more.
  • Trainees must be licensed/licensed-eligible therapists in mental health and interested in becoming certified TF-CBT providers.
  • Trainees must have agency support for TF-CBT materials, sufficient training time, and referrals of at least two to four TF-CBT cases in the 14 months following the training.
  • Trainees must provide psychotherapy to an active caseload of age-appropriate children/adolescents (ages 3 - 18) who have a clear memory of their trauma as well as access to an engaged support person/caregiver.
