DHS announces Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) training for mental health professionals

Thanks to a grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) training is being offered free of charge for qualified participants.

TF-CBT is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to treat post-traumatic stress and related emotional and behavioral difficulties in children and adolescents. The training offers mental health professionals a comprehensive understanding of TF-CBT and its application in therapy through four days of training and 14 consultations.

TF-CBTWeb (https://tfcbt2.musc.edu) is an online prerequisite for attending this training. Registrants accepted for this training will need to complete the 10-hour prerequisite which costs $35. A certificate of completion will be due May 5, 2025. If this is not received prior to the training, you will not be able to attend the training.

Event Details:

  • Date: May 15 - 16 and June 23 - 24, 2025
  • Time: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. CT
  • Where: Washburn Center for Children, Minneapolis, MN
  • Registration

Each day will include breaks in the morning, afternoon and at lunchtime.

The TF-CBT training program is designed for Minnesota-based therapists to learn the basics of TF-CBT as well as advanced applications of TF-CBT to special populations and clinical presentations such as foster care, African-American youth, youth on the autism spectrum, LGBTQ+ youth, traumatic grief, youth with problematic sexual behaviors and more.  We ask that participants meet the following criteria:

  • Trainees must be licensed/licensed-eligible therapists in mental health and interested in becoming certified TF-CBT providers.
  • Trainees must have agency support for TF-CBT materials, sufficient training time and referrals of at least two to four TF-CBT cases in the 14 months following the training.
  • Trainees must see an active caseload of age-appropriate children/adolescents (ages 3 - 18) who have a clear memory of their trauma as well as access to an engaged support person/caregiver.
  • Space is limited to 36 participants, who will be selected based on their applications.
