Hearing Loss Basics video chat for sign language interpreters

Minnesota Department of Human Services, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Division

Two men using a tablet device to communicate.

Hearing loss can create communication barriers in almost every part of a person’s life — from social gatherings to work, making phone calls to accessing services. Each person’s experience with hearing loss is unique, and how they communicate reflects that experience. As interpreters, you know that for many deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing people having access to sign language can reduce those barriers. You may also have encountered many people with hearing loss who do not sign.

This workshop will highlight communication strategies and tips for working with someone who has hearing loss but doesn’t sign, by:

  • Recognizing differences in hearing loss.
  • Identifying assistive technology for people with hearing loss.
  • Building awareness of how Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Division can help.
