DHS announces July 28 children’s behavioral health crisis follow-up event

Minnesota caregivers, counties, tribes, hospitals and community providers are working diligently to find supportive services that match the needs of children with complex mental health and substance use disorder issues. Some of these children, especially those with a history of aggression and other behavioral concerns, are placed in emergency departments because they do not meet medical necessity for hospital admission and are subsequently boarded while community options are explored.

Virtual event for caregivers

The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) will host a virtual event on July 28 with a DHS panel of subject matter experts, along with caregivers, community partners and stakeholders, to have a conversation about experiences caring for youth with behavioral health needs. This event serves as a follow-up to some of the recommendations outlined at the Minnesota Children’s Summit held in January 2022 and the Children's Behavioral Health Crisis webinar held in May 2022.

The goal of this follow-up event is to come together to identify strategies to assist children while in their current living situations and to prevent prolonged emergency department stays.

Date and time: Thursday, July 28 from 1 to 2 p.m.
