2022 Odyssey webinar registration now open

The Odyssey conference committee is excited to announce our first Odyssey 2022 webinar: Trauma Across Generations: the impact of Historical Trauma on disability and aging, presented by Sam Simmons.

Overview

We invite you to explore the link between historical trauma and current disparities impacting health, aging and access to disability services in the African American community and other communities of color. Sam Simmons will provide insight into culturally sensitive, trauma-informed approaches to improve racially equitable access, engagement, collaboration and use of disability and aging services.

About Sam Simmons

Sam Simmons has over 32 years of experience as an alcohol and drug counselor and behavioral consultant. He specializes in practical, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed strategies to address historical trauma and improve outcomes for African American males and their families. He is an Adverse Childhood Experience Interface Trainer in the state of Minnesota.

Sam has received the following awards:

  • 2016 Healing the Hidden Wounds of Racial Trauma Award and Black Tear Drop Award for his vision and leadership in culturally sensitive, trauma-informed work in the community and around the country
  • 2017 Champions for Children Award for his trauma work with parents
  • 2018 Public Health Hero Award for his unique, innovative, culturally specific, trauma-informed work from the City of Minneapolis.

He is co-host of the "Voices” radio show on KMOJ FM that addresses urban community issues and co-creator of a conference called “Groundbreaking and “Visionary” that received recognition in 2018 from both Minneapolis and St. Paul mayors and Minnesota's governor.
