MDH Health Advisory: Testing asymptomatic persons in congregate settings

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has put out a Health Advisory: Testing Asymptomatic Persons for SARS-CoV-2, which details that staff and people residing in congregate settings are a priority for testing.

We want to bring this to your attention in that there has been some confusion as to which settings are a priority for testing. MDH defines “congregate settings” in the Health Advisory to include (but are not limited to) “acute care, assisted living, skilled nursing, group homes, long-term care facilities, substance use disorder treatment centers, homeless shelters, and correctional facilities.”

Therefore, congregate settings include:

  • Mental health centers/clinics
  • Residential settings for adults with mental illness
  • Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities (PRTFs)
  • Substance use disorder treatment programs – residential and non-residential
  • Community residential settings
  • Adult foster care programs
  • Children’s residential facilities

Clinical providers should have received a letter clarifying that these settings should be considered a “congregate setting” within other MDH guidance. For more information, see the Health Advisory or visit the MDH COVID-19 webpage.
