Youth Voices of Experience: A new online magazine and podcast created by youth to raise awareness about mental health

Youth MOVE MN has launched Youth Voices of Experience, a new monthly online magazine and podcast that amplifies the voices of youth who are raising awareness about mental health. Youth MOVE MN is a statewide youth-led program committed to sharing their stories to improve mental health, education, child welfare, and criminal justice systems.

Youth Voices of Experience’s launch on www.youthmove-mn.org on Thursday, May 7 coincides with National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day.

The first issue of the online magazine features a short story by Emma Warmanen, a dance work by Cathy Truong, and visual art by Lidija Namike, Long Nguyen, Jane Rohlfing, and Jarrett Vanderpoel.

“We can show youth that they aren't alone, and provide hope for any young person struggling,” says VanderPoel, age 18, of Cloquet, MN. “We can show them that what they're feeling or experiencing is nothing to be ashamed of and that there is help available.”

The first episode of the Youth Voices of Experience podcast is hosted by Youth MOVE MN Advisory Council Members Sophia Crowley and Gabe VanDeWalker. It includes new music by Taelor Nebel, Natane Tom’s story of overcoming addiction as a young teen, and Megan Palmer’s interview with a mother and daughter about generational differences In understanding mental health.

“It’s so important that conversations around mental health are intimate and honest,” says Palmer, age 18, of Minneapolis. “There’s no better way to do that than through a podcast. I’m excited to spotlight mental health in a way that is really accessible and fun.”

The online magazine includes features on:
