Mental Health Innovation Grant report released

DHS has released the mental health innovations grant program legislative report, offering an overview of activities and accomplishments for state fiscal years 2019/2020, as well as a range of recommendations moving forward.

This report outlines challenges, opportunities, findings and recommendations during the first year of implementation. Recommendations focus on:

  • Care coordination
  • Capacity
  • Housing
  • Assessment & placement
  • Mental health workforce shortage
  • Paperwork processing & turnaround times
  • Rate setting & payment
  • Data collection
  • Early intervention & Prevention

The Mental Health Innovation Grant Program is intended to improve access to and the quality of community-based, outpatient mental health services, reduce the number of people admitted to, and expedite discharges from-Anoka Metro Regional Treatment Center and community behavioral health hospitals.

The Minnesota legislature appropriated $2 million for 2017/2018 and each biennium thereafter. Funds for this grant program come from revenue captured from the county share of treatment costs for people receiving care at Anoka Metro Regional Treatment Center and the Community Behavioral Health Hospitals. Six grants were completed in June 2018:

Adult Mental Health Initiative Region V+: Transition Services

American Indian Family Center: Healing Journey

Hennepin County Adult Behavioral Health: Behavioral Health Care Center

Kanabec County: Care Connector/Navigator Model

White Earth Mental Health Program: Holistic Health Practitioners

Human Development Center: Emergency Department Case Management

The report is now online (PDF). An overview of the report and more details about grantee activities are also available now at the innovation grant website.
