Housing Stabilization Services now part of Minnesota’s state plan

We are pleased to announce that the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) has approved our 1915i application in order to provide Housing Stabilization Services. Minnesota is the first state in the country to have housing related services approved in our Medicaid State Plan through this state plan amendment. These services are designed to help people with disabilities and seniors find and keep housing. Services will be available to people who are eligible beginning July 2020.

Background:

This is an important time for these services to become available, because when people with disabilities need support to live successfully in the community, the support is often unavailable. Affordable housing is not always enough for a person with a disability to be able to find and maintain housing. Challenges such as mental illness symptoms and developmental disabilities can make it difficult for someone to find housing, budget, interact with landlords and neighbors, and understand the rules of a lease. The right supports, provided by a professional with knowledge and experience in housing, can significantly increase a person’s success.

As these services are implemented we anticipate that they will: improve housing stability and reduce homelessness and institutionalization, increase opportunities for housing and increase equity and reduce disparities in housing service access.

The Department of Human Services will continue to work closely with stakeholders in the next year to implement these new services. Stay tuned for more information. Read the press release here.
