ADA 29 years protecting our rights

Celebrate the 29th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act!

Mark your calendars for Friday, July 26!

Join us for the annual celebration of the the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It became law 29 years ago and continues to be one of the most comprehensive civil rights laws. It protects the rights of and prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. Join us to honor the ADA at this year's celebration with speakers, music, art and refreshments. For more information, see the event's Facebook page.

Agenda and guests

Minnesota Department of Human Rights Commissioner Rebecca Lucero will launch the celebration by grounding us in the importance of the ADA and how this important civil rights law strives to ensure everyone can lead full lives, rich with dignity and joy, free from discrimination.

Minnesota Department of Human Services Deputy Commissioner Claire Wilson will facilitate a panel that will include:

  • Noah McCourt and Sophie Vang will discuss their experiences with discrimination as members of the disability community
  • Chad Wilson, Attorney with the Minnesota Disability Law Center, and Sue Abderholden, Executive Director with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), will provide perspectives on how to combat discrimination in the daily lives of people with disabilities.

This year's celebration also will feature Gaelynn Lea, violinist, songwriter and 2016 NPR Tiny Desk Contest winner.
