Human Services Commissioner Emily Piper visited St. Peter on June 14 to highlight significant investments to complete a major renovation of the Minnesota Security Hospital and hire nearly 150 new employees over the next three years. A new federal grant will help make mental health services for Minnesota children more coordinated, community-focused, and collaborative. The four-year grant from the U.S. Department of Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) supports an approach called “systems of care,” which relies on linking and expanding community-based services to keep kids at home and in school. Minnesota’s number two ranking in the AARP Long-term Services and Supports State Scorecard for older adults and people with disabilities continues to show the state’s strong leadership in providing services to those populations where and how they choose. The scorecard ranks states based on their performance on long-term services and supports in affordability and access, choice of setting and provider, quality of life and quality of care, support for family caregivers and effective transitions between nursing homes, hospitals and homes. Five individuals and one organization were recognized for improving the health and lives of all people who need services to live, work and engage in their communities at the 2017 Age and Disabilities Odyssey Conference held June 21-22 in Duluth. Minnesota Human Services Commissioner Emily Piper has appointed Santo Cruz to be Deputy Commissioner for External Relations at DHS. In this role, Cruz will oversee the Office of Inspector General (OIG) as well as a number of external relations divisions he currently supervises as an assistant commissioner for DHS. The OIG manages financial fraud and abuse investigations; licenses programs such as family child care, adult foster care and mental health centers; and conducts background studies on people who apply to work in these settings. The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) is celebrating refugees with a photography exhibit and community conversations, beginning in Rochester this week. The exhibit, “When Home Won’t Let You Stay,” features photographs by James A. Bowey, a documentary photographer who explores human rights and social connections. It’s currently on display at Rochester Community and Technical College. A community conversation is planned for August in St. Paul.
