Consent Decree Secured to Address Sexual Harassment at McDonald’s Restaurants
The Minnesota Department of Human Rights (MDHR) filed a consent decree that requires a McDonald's franchisee to make sweeping changes at its 14 restaurants.
This comes after MDHR sued the franchisee in 2021. Supervisors failed to act after a 24-year-old manager sexually assaulted a 14-year-old employee at a Maple Grove McDonald's. And the company's policies said to call a non-existent phone number to report sexual harassment.
Consent decree covers four key areas
-
Policy changes to prevent and address sexual harassment and assault.
-
Effective systems for reporting harassment and discrimination.
-
Required trainings for all employees and additional training for supervisors.
-
Engagement by the CEO to help create a strong culture from the top.
Once the consent decree is approved by the court, MDHR will assess the franchisee’s compliance and, if necessary, report any violations of the agreement to the court.
