Civic Engagement Practitioners Group Meeting

Please join us at our next Civic Engagement Practitioners Group Meeting for an update on Governor Dayton’s Diversity and Inclusion Council efforts. Our special guests will include:

  • James Burroughs, Chief Inclusion Officer | Office of Governor Mark Dayton
  • Alice Roberts-Davis, Assistant Commissioner | Minnesota Department of Administration
  • Tracey Gibson, Statewide Director of Recruitment, Retention and Affirmative Action | Minnesota Management and Budget

At this meeting, James, Alice and Tracey will discuss the progress they have made leading their respective Diversity and Inclusion Council work. They will also discuss what is still needed to further inclusion in our state. There will be opportunity to ask questions and engage in conversation.

Apply to be a DEED Grant Reviewer

The Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) is seeking individuals to participate as volunteers in its grant-review process for workforce and economic development competitive grant programs (listed below). Reviewers evaluate proposals and make funding recommendations for non-profit organizations to address economic disparities in Minnesota. The anticipated time commitment is 25 total hours over a 4 week period.

Last year, 86 reviewers recommended $8.39 million in equity grants to 87 non-profit organizations!  We hope you consider this opportunity to be involved in this year’s grant-review and policy-making processes.

Pathways to Prosperity Competitive Grant Program
$12,286,000 for job training and placement of low-wage and low-skill adults who have multiple barriers to employment obtain credentials and skills that prepare them for jobs in growing fields such as health care and manufacturing.

Support Services Competitive Grant Program
$750,000 to provide grants to organizations that provide support services for individuals. This includes job training, employment preparation, internships, job assistance to fathers, financial literacy, academic and behavioral interventions for low-performing students, and youth intervention. Grants must focus on low-income communities, young adults from families with a history of intergenerational poverty, and communities of color.

Southeast Asian Economic Relief Competitive Grant Program
$500,000 for grants to organizations providing services to relieve economic disparities in the Southeast Asian community through workforce recruitment, development, job creation, and assistance of smaller organizations to increase capacity, and outreach

Capacity Building Grant Program
$500,000 for a nonprofit to administer a capacity-building program to subgrantees.  The selected organization shall provide financial assistance in the form of subgrants and technical assistance to small to medium-sized nonprofit organizations offering, or seeking to offer, workforce or economic development programming that addresses economic disparities in underserved cultural communities.

Women in High Wage, High Demand, Nontraditional Jobs Grant Program
$500,000 in grants for eligible organizations for programs that encourage and assist women to enter high-wage, high-demand, nontraditional occupations including, but not limited to those in the skilled trades, and STEM occupations. Priority is given to programs that encourage and assist women of color to enter high-wage, high-demand, nontraditional occupations and STEM occupations.

Business Development Competitive Grant Program
$1,425,000 for a grants to non-profit organizations to provide business development assistance and services to a variety of businesses and entrepreneurs.&nbsp

Community Engagement Job Opening at DHS

Community Engagement Coordinator (Job ID: 15732)

The Community and Care Integration Reform (CCIR) team manages the Department of Human Services (DHS) efforts to identify, develop and implement the program, policy, financing and systems changes needed to ensure that Minnesota complies with all of the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act requirements related to reforming care coordination/management, related payment systems, and integration of Medicaid services, including health care, behavioral health, and long term care services and supports with social services.

This individual works closely with leadership within DHS, county and tribal governments, and stakeholders to coordinate efforts to gather consumer and stakeholder perspective on case management service redesign. The information gathered will directly inform case management redesign and system modernization efforts.  Equity, diversity and inclusion is a major emphasis within the case management redesign initiative. So we are very interested in candidates who have demonstrated professional skills, experience and willingness to engage in activities, relationships and collaboration with diverse communities that would enhance organizational efforts.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Five years of professional experience with two of these years specializing in community engagement, public policy, or a related field.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for one year of experience.
  • A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for two years of experience.
  • Experience working with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Demonstrated facilitation skills with ability to successfully elicit, capture and reflect the input and feedback from diverse communities and stakeholder groups.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience working in program coordination or a related work environment.
  • Knowledge and experience conducting civic engagement activities in a government or nonprofit setting. 
  • Basic understanding of the structure of state government and the political process.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize and address issues of equality/equity, human rights and socio-economic status, specifically bias and discrimination.
  • Advanced level writing, editing, presentation development skills and experience with ability to translate complicated concepts into common language.  
  • Able to manage relations and processes across agency and other types of organizational boundaries.
  • Ability to build networks and coalitions.
