Manufacturing Matters Across Minnesota
October is Manufacturing Month in Minnesota. All month long, DEED will celebrate Manufacturing's vital place in the state's economy and labor force. Employers, career seekers, teachers, and students can learn all about the resources, data, and events for Manufacturing Month through CareerForce. These events include hiring events and job fairs for career seekers, career exploration for students, training grant overviews for businesses, and introductions to apprenticeships and youth skills training.
According to DEED's Occupational Employment & Wage Statistics (OEWS) data, the Twin Cities Metro Area has over 102,000 workers employed in over 100 different production occupations. Of course, Manufacturing includes occupations beyond production. Clearly, there is a lot of opportunity for those interested in Manufacturing in the Metro Area, whether that's with production-type occupations, transportation and material moving, engineering, sales and marketing, information technology, or other areas.
Accounting for 15% of all jobs in the region, Manufacturing is the second largest industry in Central Minnesota. Almost 1,200 Manufacturing establishments provide roughly 40,000 jobs, with average annual wages topping $60,585 which is almost $10,000 more than average wages across the total of all industries. The tight labor market and high demand for goods has pushed Manufacturing wages and openings higher than ever before, with Central Minnesota manufacturers posting a record number of more than 2,300 job vacancies in 2021.
The Manufacturing sector in Northeast Minnesota is home to over 8,400 jobs at 342 business establishments, operating in 17 different subsectors ranging from producing paper, wood, food, metal products, apparel, furniture, transportation equipment, and much more!
Manufacturing provides 14.2% of all jobs in Northwest Minnesota and with higher average wages, accounts for 18.3% of total wages. Much like other regions, Manufacturing is the second largest employing industry in the Northwest, behind Health Care & Social Assistance, but this is a significantly larger share than statewide employment and payroll concentrations at 11.5% and 12.3%, respectively.
With 660 establishments providing 35,935 jobs, Manufacturing remains the second largest employing industry in Southeast Minnesota. Manufacturers in the region paid nearly $2.4 billion in wages in 2021, offering annual average wages of just over $66,750, which was 13% higher than the average wage across all industries in the region.
Manufacturing is the largest employing industry in Southwest Minnesota, accounting for over 18% of all jobs in the region. That makes the region unique – it is the only planning region where Manufacturing is still the largest employing industry, while all other regions now rely more heavily on Health Care & Social Assistance.
