Manufacturing Month
In this month's Local Look blogs from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development's Labor Market Information office, we focus on the importance of manufacturing to every regional economy. Please contact your regional analyst for more information..
With 4,060 establishments supplying nearly 166,172 covered jobs, the Metro Area accounts for more than half (53.8%) of the state's total manufacturing employment. Manufacturing also happens to be the Metro Area's second largest-employing industry sector, behind only Health Care & Social Assistance.
Manufacturing is Central Minnesota's second largest employing industry, providing nearly 40,000 jobs with an average annual wage of more than $57,500, well above the region's overall average of $48,500. The most recent job vacancy survey reported the second highest amount of Manufacturing job openings in the past 20 years, showing there is a fantastic amount of opportunities for workers looking to find a career in Manufacturing.
The Manufacturing sector has long been an integral component of Northeast Minnesota's economy. With 8,349 jobs in 2020, Manufacturing was the 6th largest employing sector in the region, accounting for 6.3% of all jobs. The sector's $64,057 average annual wage is nearly $15,000 larger than the average wage across all industries in the region.
With around 28,000 jobs at more than 820 establishments, Manufacturing is one of the most important industries in Northwest Minnesota. In fact, about one in every seven jobs in Northwest are in Manufacturing, making it the second largest employing industry behind only Health Care & Social Assistance. Manufacturing also provided roughly $1.5 billion in total payroll in the region in 2020, with average annual wages of just under $55,000. That was nearly $10,000 higher than the total of all industries in the region.
It's no surprise that Manufacturing is a dominant industry in the 11-county Southeast region of the state. With nearly 36,500 jobs in 2020, Manufacturing is the second largest industry sector in the region (behind Health Care and Social Assistance), making up 15.5% of the total number of jobs at 669 establishments and contributing over $2.4 billion dollars in payroll in 2020.
With 30,065 jobs at 606 establishments, Manufacturing was once again the largest employing industry in Southwest Minnesota, accounting for 18% of total employment in 2020. That is the highest concentration of Manufacturing employment of the six planning regions and makes it the only region where Manufacturing is still the largest industry, just ahead of Health Care & Social Assistance.
