Minnesota Exports Drop 2 Percent

Sales of Minnesota export goods slid 2.2 percent in the third quarter, another signal of ongoing global uncertainty. That marks a sharp reversal from last year. For the third quarter of 2018, Minnesota exports were up 6.5 percent. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz pointed to President Donald Trump’s trade policy as a key reason for the decline in state exports.

Child care centers across the Northland receive funding to curb start-up costs

Across the Northland, six child care centers have received a total of $90,000 in grant money from DEED. Northland Foundation, a publicly supported foundation that serves St. Louis, Carlton, Lake, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching and Aitkin counties, applied for the funding that has been awarded to five start-ups nearing opening and one child care center in need of an expansion.

Minnesota Exports drop 2% in the Third Quarter

Minnesota exports of goods dipped 2.2% between the third quarters of 2018 and 2019 and U.S. exports fell 1.7%, according to data released by DEED.  While exports grew to North America (up 2%) and were flat to Europe during this period, they fell to Asia.

A New Leader for DEED's Employment and Training Division  

Marc Majors has been named Director of DEED’s Employment and Training (ETP) division for the State of Minnesota. He’s an experienced problem solver, who brings not only passion, but strong management experience and a vision to advance the future of our employment training programs at DEED. 

Did You Know?

The Monthly Economic Statistical Snapshot for October is out now. Highlights from the snapshot below:

  • Minnesota’s labor force participation rate was 70.3 percent, ranking third highest nationwide. The U.S. rate was 63.3 percent.
  • Minnesota’s percent of unemployed that is long-term (>27 weeks) was 10.5 percent, compared to 21.5 percent nationwide.
  • Minnesota’s 5-year business survival rate (2014-2019) was 54.8 percent, ranking fourth-highest nationwide. The national average was 50.9 percent for the same period.
