Locla Look

Each month, DEED's Regional Analysis & Outreach unit produces a series of blogs exploring local labor market information. Please contact your regional analyst for more information.

TWIN CITIES: With nearly 36,000 jobs, Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing is the Metro Area’s top-employing manufacturing subsector. In fact, where the Metro Area accounts for 53.2 percent of Minnesota’s total manufacturing employment, it accounts for 79.1 percent of the state’s Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing employment.

CENTRAL MINNESOTA: Playing to the strengths of supply chains, educational programs, and the specialized skills of the current workforce in the region, the top ten most concentrated manufacturing subsectors contain 40 percent of all manufacturing jobs in Central Minnesota. In addition to high job counts, several of these manufacturing specialties are also high paying, with average annual wages ranging from just over $44,400 in animal slaughtering and processing to nearly $90,000 in industrial machinery manufacturing.

NORTHEAST MINNESOTA: With 8,728 employees at 344 establishments, manufacturing is the sixth largest employing industry in the seven-county Northeast Minnesota planning region. As such, the Arrowhead has the lowest concentration of manufacturing employment of the six planning regions in the state, with only 6.1 percent of total jobs in manufacturing compared to 11.2 percent statewide.

NORTHWEST MINNESOTA: Now 10 years after the Great Recession, Northwest Minnesota has enjoyed substantial job growth across all industries. The manufacturing industry gained 1,067 jobs since 2013, making it one of five regional industries to net over 1,000 new jobs over the past five years, accounting for one in every 8 jobs added in the region during that time.

SOUTHEAST MINNESOTA: When it comes to manufacturing, Southeast Minnesota is a powerhouse. Manufacturing accounts for 38,499 jobs at 675 establishments, comprising 15.7 percent of the total employment in the 11-county region, which is much more concentrated than the state.

SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA: With high wages and high current demand, there are many career pathways in manufacturing worth exploring. DEED has partnered with the Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council and the South Central Workforce Council to create a labor market information campaign for students and job seekers, including a set of infographics providing useful data in an easy-to-read and understand format.
