Local Look blogs - Making Things Better

Locla Look

Each month, DEED's Regional Analysis & Outreach unit produces a series of blogs exploring local labor market information. Please contact your regional analyst for more information.

TWIN CITIES: While Anoka County continues to experience employment growth, its unemployment rate continues to drop. The county's 2.8 percent unemployment rate in 2018 was the lowest in 18 years, and that means the labor market is tight.

CENTRAL MINNESOTA: Central Minnesota has seen an average rise of 2 percent in inflation-adjusted median wage offers for job vacancies since 2012. Life, physical and social science occupations have seen the fastest inflation-adjusted growth, averaging a 16 percent jump in median wage offers for job openings.

NORTHEAST MINNESOTA: Enterprise Minnesota, a consulting organization that works with manufacturing companies to help them compete and grow profitably, has released its 11th annual State of Manufacturing survey results. Based on interviews with over 400 Minnesota manufacturing executives, the State of Manufacturing shows a confident industry that’s optimistic about the future, despite growing challenges like the workforce shortage.

NORTHWEST MINNESOTA: After adding 25,000 new workers since the turn of the century, the labor force in the 26-county Northwest region surpassed 300,000 workers in 2015, and has hovered right around that number ever since. The region’s growth rate of 9.2 percent since 2000 slightly outpaced the statewide increase, leaving Northwest with the second largest regional workforce outside the Twin Cities area.

SOUTHEAST MINNESOTA: Focused on making things better for other people, community and social service occupations include social workers, counselors, and religious workers. While they don’t make up a large portion of total employment in Southeast Minnesota, community and social service workers play an important role in the regional economy.

SOUTHWEST MINNESOTAWhile Minnesota has enjoyed a steady increase in labor force participants year after year, the Southwest planning region has experienced ebbs and flows. There have been three periods so far this century in which the regional labor force saw dramatic decreases, followed by offsetting increases, with the net result being a gain of only 51 labor force participants between 2000 to 2018.
