DEED grants to help St. Cloud companies

Two St. Cloud companies will benefit from the latest round of workforce development grants awarded by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. DEED is giving Nahan Printing, Inc. $300,000 and American Axle & Manufacturing more than $208,000.

Need a job? Vacancies continue to outnumber job hunters

Minnesota's worker shortage continues to grow more severe. State economic officials report the number of job openings in the fourth quarter of last year rose 20 percent over the same period the year before. The semi-annual tally found 137,000 job vacancies. Greater Minnesota saw a 34 percent increase in openings over the year. The jump was 11 percent in the Twin Cities.

State Job Vacancies Climb to 137,000 in Fourth Quarter 2018

Minnesota employers reported nearly 137,000 job vacancies in the fourth quarter of 2018, up 20 percent from the same period one year earlier, according to figures released today by DEED. DEED’s biannual Job Vacancy Survey found that the state had 0.6 unemployed people for every job vacancy. The job vacancy rate was 4.9 percent, meaning there were 4.9 openings for every 100 jobs in the state. In the 2017 fourth quarter survey, the statewide job vacancy rate was 4.2 percent.

Did You Know?

The Minnesota Daily reported that a report released last month by Peace Corps, the U.S. governmental organization that connects volunteers with underserved communities, ranked the University of Minnesota as third in the nation for supplying Peace Corps volunteers. The University produced 70 undergraduate alumni volunteers in 2018 and has supplied more than 1,500 volunteers to the Peace Corps since 1961.
