With the goal of encouraging more than $5.6 billion in private investment in 20 years, some define Destination Medical Center by the numbers, rather than by designs and concepts. To achieve the DMC goals, Mayo Clinic plans to invest $3.5 billion in Rochester and hopes to spur $2.1 billion in additional private investment. The legislation that created the effort commits up to $585 million in public spending, all of which will be used on expenses related to public infrastructure and project management. So far, $690.6 million in private investment has been verified by DEED.

What’s the job of the future? Coder? Robotics engineer? Mars-shuttle pilot? If you’re looking at the job field that’s expected to grow the most in Minnesota in the next 10 years, the answer is a bit more down to earth: personal health care aides. Minnesota is expected to add 23,000 personal health care aide jobs between 2016 and 2026, more than in any other specific job field, according to DEED.
Somali-American entrepreneur, Hamse Warfa, was named DEED Assistant Commissioner for Economic Opportunity on March 22nd. The appointment makes him the highest ranking African immigrant in Minnesota state government. Governor Tim Walz’s transition team had in January announced Warfa as one of three finalists for the position of DEED commissioner to serve in his cabinet.
