Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz appointed seven commissioners; Google News Lab director will run DEED

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan announced their picks for the heads of the state's departments of Employment and Economic Development, Commerce, Revenue, Public Safety, and others during a press conference in downtown Minneapolis Friday. Steve Grove will be the new commissioner of DEED. Grove is currently director of Google News Lab and the founder of Silicon North Stars.

Google looking at Becker to build a $600 million data center

The data center, essentially a big building full of servers, was disclosed Thursday in a regulatory filing by Minneapolis-based Xcel Energy, which would play a big role in the project. The Google server farm would create about 50 full-time tech jobs and about 2,000 construction jobs over 18 to 24 months. The Google facility would be one of the largest private construction projects in recent state history.

The Mora Industrial Park recently received its Shovel Ready Site certification after, making both of Kanabec County’s industrial parks easily marketable to industrial businesses. The second, Braham Industrial Park, was certified in June 2018. The DEED's Shovel Ready Site Certification Program provides communities with a competitive edge in attracting business startups, expansions or relocations.

Minnesota Manufacturers Expect Stable Conditions in 2019

Minnesota manufacturers reported mostly unchanged or improved conditions during 2018, according to an annual joint survey by the DEED and the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. The 2018 Minnesota Manufacturing Business Conditions Survey also found that respondents had a split outlook on production for 2019 with 47 percent believing that production would increase and an equal percentage expecting it to remain the same.

DEED Awards $5.67 Million for Contamination Cleanup

DEED awarded $5.67 million in grants towards cleaning up 12 contaminated sites approved for redevelopment. The funding was awarded by DEED under the Contamination Cleanup and Investigation Grants Program. These projects will create or retain 3,575 jobs and attract $763.9 million in private investment. The local tax bases are expected to increase by $10.58 million because of these projects.

Minnesota ranked 7th over all in UnitedHealth Foundation's annual health rankings. Their model measures factors like health outcomes, behaviors, community and environment, policy and clinical care. According to their methodology Minnesota is 7th in the nation for overall health.
